PG Identification

In v1.2, we start with scaling Health-System owned physician groups, since these are the ones that our hospital customers are most interested in. Then, we'll target PGs that will have highest impact for Employer.

Eventually, we'd like to classify Physician Groups as:

  1. Health-System Owned
  2. Independent Private Group
  3. Academic Faculty Practice
  4. Joint Venture

Summary

We consider a Physician Group to be "Health-system owned" if the following conditions are met:

  1. identify "strong connections"* if there are sufficiently many physicians affiliated with the Physician Group who appear on claims alongside HCOs owned by the Health System
    • [Physician Group] -> [Physician] -> [HCO] -> [Health System]
  2. the Physician Group has "strong connections" with exactly one Health System

To solve this problem, we construct a graph database. See more here.

*strong connections

A connection is "strong" if:

  • intersection of individual physician arrays has at least 50 individual physicians

AND either:

  • jaccard similarity of individual physician arrays > 0.3 OR
  • containment > 0.5 in either direction (e.g. at least 50% of physicians in A appear in B)

Output

You can see the list of Physician Groups at components/spines/providers by filtering Provider_type to "Physician Group".

If the Physician Group previously existed in the manual list that Ryan/Nick created, we keep the manually identified Physician Group.
